Q&A from webinar

‘Individuals and interactions over processes and tools’

Despite this being part of the Manifesto for Agile Software Development, tools (automation) have arguably become a key component for the successful adoption and implementation of Agile methods by project teams. For most teams the key lifecycle areas that are automated are: configuration management, build & release management and testing.

The introduction and effective use of automation, especially test automation, is usually not straight forward. This can be due to:

  • Unplanned Costs (in terms of both financial and human effort)
  • Poor selection of tool(s)
  • Insufficient time to learn and understand the tool(s)
  • Ineffective implementation of the tool(s)

This webinar discussed automation throughout the agile development lifecycle (for both development and test processes). The different types of tools for each phase of the lifecycle were reviewed - covering those used by both the development and test teams. For the development phase we discussed how to set up unit test frameworks and the usage of build & release and configuration management tools. For the test phases we discussed functional and non-functional test tools and how these should be implemented, plus the use and implementation of frameworks and test management tools.

The presentation provided useful comparisons on the application of open-source and commercial off the shelf (COTS) tools to Agile projects.

The presenter also discussed our hands-on experience of implementing tools for automation on Agile projects.

We hope attendees gained a practitioner’s perspective on what tools worked well and not so well, issues to be avoided and lessons learned for automation on Agile projects.
