Starting a new job is always an exciting and challenging when you are transitioning from academic life to the real world. As someone who has recently embarked on this career journey, I am thrilled to share my experience working at Sogeti, where I’ve learned so much in such a short time.

Tell us about yourself

I am Tumi Ogunbadejo, originally from Nigeria but now proud to call Dublin home. After completing my undergraduate degree in Computer Science at Trinity College, I went on to pursue a Master’s in the same field. With my academic journey behind me I took the plunge and applied for a role at Sogeti in Dublin, where I started as a graduate trainee last September.

What is your role at Sogeti?

At Sogeti, I am part of the testing team currently working on a government administration project. While the role is still relatively new to me. My work involves manual testing, which has been a significant shift from what I studied in college. I am excited to continue learning and growing in this space.

Unlike university assignments, where deadlines can sometimes be flexible, working at Sogeti has introduced me to a more structured routine. It’s been an adjustment, but one that has contributed to both my professional and personal development.

We have heard from other graduates that the training and mentorship provided at Sogeti have been really helpful. How has your experience been?

Training and mentorship have truly been the highlights of my journey at Sogeti. The initial learning phase was incredibly supportive. During the first five weeks, I connected with colleagues across various roles from senior consultants to project managers which gave me valuable insights into the company’s operations.

We completed key certifications such as the ISTQB exam, Microsoft’s DP-900, and Data Fundamentals, preparing for them in just five days. The constant guidance and support from our mentors and seniors made all the difference.

Additional access to platforms like Udemy and NEXT also deepened my understanding of essential tools and concepts. Throughout, experienced colleagues have always been ready to offer advice and support.

How is your first client project going?

I recently started working on my first client project with a government administration team. It’s a small, tight-knit group of six people which I really appreciate. The smaller team size has allowed me to take on more responsibility and develop a stronger sense of independence in my work.

I also find it rewarding that our manager encourages us to be self-sufficient. He gives us the freedom to work independently and make our own decisions, helping to prepare us for future leadership roles. This approach has been great for my growth, as it allows me to problem solve on my own while still receiving guidance when needed.

Personal and professional growth at Sogeti

Working at Sogeti has inspired me to take ownership of my career development. Although I began in testing, I am eager to explore other areas of the business. I see this as an opportunity to diversify my skill set and build a well-rounded portfolio. I don’t feel confined to my current role, and I truly appreciate that Sogeti actively supports employees who want to explore new opportunities within the company.

Since joining, I’ve developed technical skills through hands-on experience with specialized software and tools, and I’ve also improved my time management by balancing multiple tasks and deadlines. While some tools are project-specific, they have been an invaluable part of my learning journey. My time at Sogeti has reinforced the importance of continuous learning.

How did you find Sogeti’s Culture

What really stood out to me when I first joined Sogeti was the company’s welcoming atmosphere. From day one I have been impressed by how approachable everyone is including senior leadership. It’s not every day you get the chance to have a conversation with the CEO, but at Sogeti, that level of accessibility is genuinely encouraged.

I also love the office environment it’s calm and peaceful yet there is always something happening, from casual pizza parties to cultural celebrations like Diwali.

And how was your experience at Women in STEM?

A recent highlight of my career was participating in a Women in STEM event an incredible opportunity to represent Sogeti. Although I was initially nervous I really enjoyed speaking with prospective employees about my experience and the opportunities Sogeti offers.

The event allowed me to connect with other women in STEM and served as a great platform to showcase Sogeti’s welcoming and inclusive culture. I had attended events like this during my college days, but this time I was on the other side representing my company Sogeti and sharing my journey there. It was an amazing and empowering experience for me.

My time at Sogeti has been a great learning journey. I’ve grown a lot since joining and look forward to exploring new roles, taking on more responsibility, and continuing to develop within Sogeti and the wider Capgemini group.
